Actinic or UV keratosis: Natural Cures

Actinic or UV keratosis is a lesion that promotes skin cancer. We analyze the causes, natural cures for actinic keratosis and the current common

therapies proposed.

The cause lies in excessive exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet rays, which also cause skin aging. Actinic keratosis appears especially after the age

of 40, increases with age and initially manifests itself as a small reddish growth or plaque covered with crusts that change the color of the skin to

reddish-brown. The lesions are dry and rough. It has a slow development and can reach a size of 0,4 to 1 inch in diameter.

Affected people may have a single lesion or multiple lesions, covering a large area of skin. The most affected sites are those exposed to the sun: face,

lips, back of hands, front part of the chest, back and scalp of bald subjects. Only one in 4 actinic keratoses heals spontaneously, while the other 3

can become skin cancer.

From a biochemical point of view, there is an increase in free radicals and cytokines favoring inflammation. Natural products for actinic

keratosis improve DNA repair and the skin's barrier function.

Traditional therapy consists of a gel to be applied on the lesions of actinic keratosis, based on Ingenol mebutate (Picato) or on Imiquimod. But,

both the Italian drug agency (AIFAthan the European one (EMAhave banned for some time (January 17, 2020) the use of Picato because it can

cause a higher incidence of cancer on the area of skin treated with this gel.

In fact, a study showed a higher probability of skin cancer on area treated with ingenol mebutate than with Imiquimod. However, this means that

also Imiquimod can cause skin cancer in the area where it is applied, albeit to a lesser extent.

However, a natural cure for actinic keratosis is possible with natural substances like Calendula Officinalis and Rhodiola rosea, effective and

above all without side effects. They have an anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, soothing action and reduce the production of free radicals. Together

with other natural substances, like flavoproteins and coenzymes, they are able not only to cure but also to prevent actinic keratosis, repairing

DNA, restoring the skin's barrier function and thus recreating the normalcy of the immune system.
